Basketball in hoop.
All basketball players in grades 5 and 6 have the opportunity to try out for a travel team. Southern Maine Summit, sponsored by XL Sports, involves teams from surrounding communities and is a competitive program. Standings are kept and all teams participate in a double elimination playoff at the end of the season to determine division winners. Our goal is to not have to cut kids and to find an appropriate spot for any child interested in playing. Having said that, for playing time purposes, we would like to not have any more than 10 players per team. After players are placed on teams, games and practices will begin in early November. 1-2 practices a week. 1-2 games per weekend. The league season runs from late November to early February. This is a large commitment and although South Portland Parks & Recreation stresses skill development, this is a competitive program.
